Lee Valley Festival 2008: February update

The Lee Valley Festival 2008 will be an exciting series of events and activities over four days between 19 and 22 June celebrating the start of the Cultural Olympiad in August 2008.

Key events

Thursday 19 June: Business Opportunities and Business Readiness for 2012 A networking event by the North London Chamber of Commerce to hear about the 'Competefor' website, the regeneration of the Lee Valley, and how to win overseas contracts. 17.00-20.30, Lee Valley Athletics Centre. Friday 20 June: The Cultural Olympiad: Engaging young people through arts and sports A London conference to debate how arts and sport can make a real difference to young people, especially those from disadvantaged communities. 10.00-17.00, Bernie Grant Arts Centre, Tottenham. Followed by evening entertainment with special guests. Contact peter@fourgreens.org.

Saturday 21 June: Tottenham Festival and Carnival The annual Tottenham Festival and Carnival, now in its 11th year, attracting up to 80,000 people. 11.00 departs Eade Road, N15, 13.00 arrives Bruce Castle Park, N17. Acts begin 12 noon, closes 19.00. Contact anniewhyte@mail.com.

Sunday 22 June: Sports activities and Circus/Street Theatre Arts Festival Lee Valley Athletics Centre, Picketts Lock, Enfield. Contact nchant@leevalleypark.org.uk.

Other events

A Festival Fund of £30,000 was set up to help local organisations finance events to take place during the Lee Valley Festival. Nine winners were chosen and an additional eight have been promised financial support from other sources.

Arts projects and workshops

Fellowship Art Challenge organised by Waltham Forest Council. An art exhibition and workshop at the Athletics Centre by young people from local schools on Sunday 22 June.

A Pageant for Barnet organised by East Barnet Community Festival. Performances of plays lasting 45 minutes at different venues during the festival, including Oak Hill Park as part of the East Barnet Festival.

Youth Performance and Information Fair organised by Youth Entertainment Sound System. Development workshops for young people, leading to an information fair and performances on the Youth Stage at the Tottenham Festival.

Performing Arts Showcase organised by Kumpanya Arts. Workshops for Turkish/Kurdish, Turkish Cypriot people culminating in performances at the Tottenham Festival.

Carnival Workshops organised by People's World Carnival Band. Workshops for people between 10 and 25 years from April to the Tottenham Festival.

Broadcasting the Lee Valley Festival organised by Enfield Arts Partnership. Local young people will be acting as reporters at Festival events and broadcasting by radio.

Sports and healthy living projects

Edmonton Festival of Life organised by the Community and Environment Project Office. A community festival promoting physical exercise and healthy eating in Pymmes Park.

The Grahame Park Olympics organised by Barnet Council. A celebration of the Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2012 at the Grahame Park Estate.

Stellar organised by Cirque Nova. A group of disabled artists will learn circus skills and perform aerial and floor acrobatics, stilt walking and poi juggling at the Athletics Centre on Sunday 22 June.

Go Enfield Go! organised by Enfield Council. A one-hour 'workout' of as many young people as possible from Enfield schools at the Athletics Centre on Friday 20 June.

Combined arts and sports events

The Inclusion Zone organised by Luminous Frenzy. A one-day arts and sport festival for Learning Disabled and Disabled people at the Tottenham Festival.

Arts and the Community organised by Yashua Arts and Culture. A three-day cultural, employment and sporting extravaganza at Gallery Fore in Edmonton, Craig Park Youth Centre and Tottenham Festival.

Haringey Cultural Olympiad Showcase organised by London & Quadrant Housing. Art and sport showcases in Haringey focusing on youth engagement, community cohesion, cultural diversity and healthy living.

Waterways projects

So Much to Do! organised by Friends of Tottenham Marshes. Free guided nature walks, arts workshops, family treasure hunts, guided cycle rides from the Waterside Centre at Stonebridge Lock, and canoeing and water safety training on the Lee.

Cruise Your River organised by N & E Branch Inland Waterways. Free boat trips for the public using a community boat cruising the Lee Navigation.

Freight by Water organised by N & E Branch Inland Waterways. Cruising display on 45ft narrowboat/towed pontoon to show the green and ecological benefits of transport of freight by water.

Riverside Walk organised by N & E Branch Inland Waterways. A free guided walk along the River Lee from Enfield Lock Station to Ponders End.
