The Lee Valley Festival 2008

 

The Lee Valley Festival 2008 will be a high-profile series of events and activities over four days between 19 and 22 June. The aim is to stimulate enthusiasm in North London for the Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2012 and to celebrate the start of the Cultural Olympiad in August 2008.

Thursday 19 June: Business Opportunities and Business Readiness for 2012 A networking event by the North London Chamber of Commerce for all North London buisnesses to hear about the 'Competefor' website and its support and tendering opportunities, the development of the Lee Valley Regional Park and regeneration of the Lee Valley, and how to win overseas contracts. 17.00-20.30, venue to be confirmed. Friday 20 June: The Cultural Olympiad: Engaging young people through arts and sports A London conference to debate how arts and sport can make a real difference to young people, especially those from disadvantaged communities. 10.00-17.00, Bernie Grant Arts Centre, Tottenham. Saturday 21 June: Tottenham Festival and Carnival The annual Tottenham Festival and Carnival, now in its 11th year, attracting up to 80,000 people. 11.00 departs Eade Road, N15, 13.00 arrives Bruce Castle Park, N17. Acts begin 12 noon, closes 19.00. Contact anniewhyte@mail.com.

Sunday 22 June: Sporting Futures: See it. Try it. Love it. An event to showcase the very best of sport and physical activity in North London. Activities to try - and watch - for all the family. Lee Valley Athletics Centre, Picketts Lock, Enfield. Contact anita@marketingfit.co.uk.

Other events

A Festival Fund of £30,000 was set up to help local arts organisations finance events to take place during the Lee Valley Festival. Submissions were requested in October last year and 29 were received by 12 December. They were independently scored and short-listed by Peter Sinclair (Four Greens), Nicole Brown (London Development Agency), Naomi Chant (Lee Valley Regional Park Authority), Lorraine Cox (Enfield Council) and Patricia Cahalane (North London Strategic Alliance) on 19 December, and nine winners were chosen on 11 January 2008. An additional eight projects have been promised financial support from other sources.
