The Highgate Literary & Scientific Institution has been a focal point of Highgates varied cultural life since it was established in 1839. It stands in the heart of Highgate Village, overlooking Pond Square, in the building to which it moved in 1840, and is one of the oldest such institutions still in existence in London.
The Gallery mounts exhibitions of contemporary art, selected by the Art Gallery Committee, as well as occasional national touring exhibitions and displays of work by pupils from local schools and art colleges.
The walls are very high with a 19th century arched wooden ceiling and a glass lantern at the top. The Gallery is also known as Victoria Hall when the space is used for lectures and classes.
